So, today is Halloween.
And all the talk is of “scary” things – skeletons, zombies, ghouls, ghosts and goblins. Boo!
But in my opinion something much more scary goes on every day, in most homes, and with far greater impact.
And that is not fear of the dead, or undead, but fear of living. Fear of exploring who we can really be. Fear of what might happen if we dig deep and get rid of what is blocking us and allow ourselves to shine bright out in the world.
I’m sure I must have mentioned Marianne Williamson’s brilliant speech on “our deepest fear” before, but here it is as a reminder:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” (if the word God doesn’t work for you just replace it with Universe, Spirit, Life or whatever does work for you)
When we allow ourselves to go deeper than the surface, to start to connect with what is real and meaningful for us as an individual, it is scary. There is a lot there we have chosen to hide and ignore over the years, things we don’t like about ourselves – so often masked as things we don’t like about others, about circumstances, about life.
Believe me, I know, I was living like this too and still have to watch myself… we are all work in progress.
But the reward for going deeper – for being brave and taking the scary mask off – is immense. The sense of relief, lightness, clarity, joy, peace, connection, delight… authenticity… comes flooding in. In turn this leads to better flow in our lives, in all areas of our lives.
The first time I did this, really went deep and cleared stuff out, I felt reborn afterwards. It was as though all the shackles had gone and finally I could move freely (in fact I skipped like a little girl through the streets of Capri!), or as though the rain had gone and I could see clearly. That has stayed with me, 14 or so years on, and even if I wobble it is so much easier now to get back on track. This is why I find it so vital and rewarding to help my clients find this unfettered joy.
So, this Halloween, I urge you to face the scary stuff within and make this the year you become fully living and not a shadowy version of the real you. It is less scary, and easier, to do it with someone who can help; just email me if you’d like to explore this (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Until next time, with love
